Augsburg’s High Festival of Peace has been an official holiday since 1950. On 8th August 1650, the protestants in Augsburg were the first to commemorate this day in order to celebrate their equality with the Roman-Catholic church.
Today there are many people with different religious beliefs living here; almost 50 percent of our fellow citizens have a migration background. For this reason, the Festival of Peace has been an interreligious and intercultural celebration for many years, accompanied by a programme of cultural events leading up to the holiday.
Every year, the festival runs under a different slogan. The motto of 2019 will be “freedom”.
